Newcastle Track Cycling Association - Mid-Summers Open Cycle Track Meet 15^th June 2013

Despite a horrendous weather forecast the Newcastle-under-Lyme Mid-Summer Open Track meeting in Staffordshire went ahead in warm and sunny conditions with no rain interruptions.

The main event of the day was the Swinnerton Cycles sponsored Sprint part of the season long British Cycling Sprinters League. With a good field attracted including British Cycling Paralympic multi medallist Jody Cundy MBE. The early rounds went very much to the seeding of the 200m time trial with Matthew Rotherham and home track local rider Sean Mayer of Swinnerton Cycles winning through comfortably but special mention to Joseph Truman who is still only a Youth A rider with a fast time trial ride to give him the 3rd seed.

The 2nd round sorted the Semi-finalist out with Ryan Owens upsetting the seeding by winning through into the last four and then eventually going through to win the 3rd place slot. In the Final for 1^st and 2^nd Sean Mayer drew the position to lead but Matthew Rotherham was forced to the front, positions swapped again but then it was Matt who led out the sprint in the back straight but waited for Sean’s attack to turn on the gas for a very controlled display of lead out sprinting, holding Sean off for Matthew Rotherham to with the Swinnerton Cycles sponsored Sprinters League.

The other Counting event for the British Cycling “Hard Track Endurance League” was the Newcastle Track 20km Grand Prix, this resulted in a sprint finish with Matthew Rotherham leading out at the bell, with John McClelland finishing strong only for Thomas Gregory of Halesowen A & CC come round John up the finishing straight.

There were lots more sprinting in the Swinnerton Cycles sponsored B-Sprint being won by Jack Hoyle with Thomas Gregory 2^nd but a well deserved 3rd place by Rachel James of the Abergavenny Road Club who concentrated in this sprint instead of the Woman’s only sprint.

The sprinting continued in the Brookscycles.co.uk Women's Sprint, with an exciting final with Rosie Blount coming 2nd, Helen Scott away from her tandem racing coming in 2^nd and Danielle Khan 4^th but it was young youth rider Sophie Capewell of the Lichfield City CC who powered away from the others despite the sprint being full, Sophie could still manage an impressive out of the saddle acceleration just before the line on youth gears to win clear of the others.

Other rides of note were local riders Roger Duncalf and Stephen Hall both rode extremely well to both of them win separate events in the B-Class.

In the Youth events local cycling club “Newcastle Racing Club 2001” have sponsored this event now for over 10-years and it was Josef Feiven who won the Omnium from Liam Zwetschnikow and James Duncalf 3rd, with young Samuel Hall who rode against older riders to win his class in the Youth-C category.
