03/07/2008 - Sunshine Returns To Brooks TL

After last weeks heavy rain, this week saw the return of blue skies and the latest round of the Brooks Cycles Track League. With a large number of riders missing due to the National Masters Track Championships in Newport, this did not distract from what turned out to be a first class nights racing.

The evening started with the Freewheelers League with 20 riders taking part. After some very spirited racing and close finishes in which all riders competed with distinction the top points scorers in each group were as follows, Group 1 Charlotte Houlton, Group 2 Sally Birchall and in Group 3 Megan Wynn.

The main league saw the continued theme of close racing. The www.velodrome.org.uk Keirin league round saw Steven Hill, Brooks Cycles, prove to be far too strong for his final opponents as he won from Alan Peet, VC St Raphael and Robert Lambton Newport CC.

The A Class events saw a good spread of points being awarded with Alan Peet top scoring with 9 points as he won the 10 mile scratch and the devil.

The B Class events saw 14 years old Matthew Rotherham dominate the events winning the 8 lap scratch, devil and the 10 mile scratch. 

The Youth events produced some of the most exciting races of the night with a notable first win of the year for Sam Birchall of Lyme RC and two wins for fast emerging rider Jacob James of Newcastle RC 2001.

Notable also was the point achieved in the Team Sprint by first night fixed wheel rider Matt Barnett, Lyme RC. Matt is the latest in a long line of riders who are moving up from the Freewheelers league and clearly shows the rewards of the successful youth development at the Newcastle Track.
