6th May 2010: After the first week washout of the Newcastle-under-Lyme Track League at Lyme Valley Stadium in Staffordshire, week two saw cloudy but dry conditions that greeted the good turnout of riders that contested a great night of racing. The event was also added an extra dimension with the floodlights being switched on for the final forty five minutes.
The first round of the Neil Potter Sponsored Handicap League saw sixteen riders line up. Youth rider Ryan Whatmough of Shepherd Cycles used his long mark to good effect as he held on for a fine win from a fast finishing group of riders led home by Jack Fearon of Weaver Valley CC and Joffie Houlton Lyme RC.
The A Class events saw a healthy group of riders contest the four race programme with Adrian Adgar Dinnington RC the early overall leader. Although he did not win any of the races he scored consistently with three second places and a third to total seven points. Two riders tied for second place with Andrew Jackson of Go Sport Spex RT winning the final 10 mile scratch were he led home a seven rider group. Youth rider Matthew Rotherham Sportcity Velo won impressively the opening 8 lap scratch event and the devil to also score 6 points. This season promises to be a close run affair with a number of new riders moving up to the A League.
The B Class events saw Ryan Whatmough Shepherd Cycles place second in the 8 lap scratch and third in the 10 mile scratch. Add this to his win in the handicap and he is the early overall leader in this league. Another impressive performance came from youth rider Christian Braybrooke, Sportcity Velo in winning the 10 mile scratch from another youth rider Sam Birchall, Lyme RC. It was also pleasing to see Neil Cummins return to the track after a 20 years absence to win the opening 8 lap scratch.
In the four race youth events it was very noticeable the skills displayed by all the riders, particularly in the devil which was a very exciting race won by Christian Braybrooke from the fast improving George Edwards of Lyme RC. Along with a win in the block handicap George is the overall leader with six points. Other wins came from Sean Mayer and Louis Preston of Lyme RC who tied in the 200m time trial.
The Freewheelers racing saw a large number of new faces with a number of last years riders moving up to the main league which is what the coaches and officials of the track are pleased to see. The top point?s scorers on the night were as follows in the three groups;
