The weather was far kinder at the second week of the Brooks Cycles Track League at Newcastle, Staffs with blue skies, although there was a strong back straight wind for the riders to contend with. This improved weather also reflected in the increased attendance with 65 riders taking part.
The night started with the Freewheelers League where 24 riders competed over three groups with four races each. After these races the top points scorers in each group were as follows; Group 1 Archie Scott, Group 2 Sallie Birchall and Group 3 Megan Williams. Special mention goes to Bradley Hill who crashed after catching his toe clip on the banking however this did not deter him as he was patched up and came back to place forth in the final race.
The main league saw 16 riders in the A Class events with the racing being very fast. The first race over 8 laps was won by the impressive Matthew Rotherham from Sportcity Velo followed by Newcastle Track League debutant Adrian Adgar of Go Sport Spex RT winning the point?s race. The first round of the Keirin League saw six riders make through to the final where there was a close finish with Matthew Rotherham taking a fine win from Adrian Adgar and Declan Byrne.
The final 5 mile scratch saw a fast pace throughout with League leader Declan Byrne holding off Adrian Adgar. Both riders were part of a five rider break which formed just after half way that stayed away to the finish.
The B Class races saw a good spread of winners with another track league debutant Neil Clarke showing great form to win the devil and the course de primes. League leader Anthony Houlton continued his good form from last week scoring five points which included a win in the B Class 5 mile scratch. The B Class winner was Phil Braybrooke who won the opening B race in the 8 lap scratch.
The Youth events saw thirteen riders compete and they all put on a display of superb racing. The league table now shows three riders sharing the lead in Imogen Crooks, Joel Partington and Sam Birchall. Just behind them is the top point?s scorer on the night in Joe Turner who won the Handicap and came second in the 400m standing start time trial. One of the best finishes on the night was the devil where there was a blanket finish with Sam Birchall just taking the verdict from Joel Partington and Christian Braybrooke.
