The final event of the 2008 Brooks Cycles Track League took place on Sunday 7th September at the Lyme Valley Stadium, Newcastleunder Lyme. Despite a weather forecast of rain, a full programme of events was run, with only a slight delay for a rain shower. The forecast probably put off a number of riders attending however the 47 riders who did ride put on a great show with some fantastic close races which was enjoyed by the watching parents and supporters.
In the A Class events, last years champion Andrew Magnier won all five events however this was not good enough to overtake Kian Emadi who rode consistently on the day to be crowned the 2008 League Champion. This is an impressive performance as Kian is only 15 years of age and is now the youngest ever winner of the league. Magniers most impressive win came in the final 10 mile scratch event where he lapped nearly the entire field.
The final round of the velodrome.org.uk Kieren League saw six riders contest the final where Andrew Magnier came past Kian Emadi down the home straight in a close finish. Kian had the consolation of winning the overall title as a result of Steven Hill?s absence. Hill was competing in the European Junior Championships in Poland, where he had already won a silver medal in the team sprint the previous day.
The B Class League title was already decided before this event with a deserved winner in Alex Simmons. The main dual of the day was between team mates Matthew Rotherham and Luke Boulton who were fighting over second place. As a result of Matthews 11 points scored on the day he took the runners up position.
The Youth events saw an excellent entry of thirteen riders. The big winner on the day was Jacob James who won three events and placed second in two. These superb performances moved him up to third overall in the league. The overall league title went to Sam Birchall who although did not win any event on the day, his excellent performances over the year gave him the title. Special mention also goes to Joffie Houlton who won the first and last event of the meet with two great rides.
The freewheelers event were again well supported . In Group 1 Joel Partington won three races from Alex Webb. However Alex had the consolation of winning the overall title. In Group 2 Sally Birchall top scored with seven points. The league overall title went to Matt Barnett who scored two points at this meet. The closest competition for the league title came in Group 3 with Liam Zwetschnikow and Megan Wynn equal on points going in to the last race. Liam held off Megan in this race to take second place and the title by one point.
The season has ended on a high after last thursday and this event to send the riders home looking forward to next season, which gets under way in May.
