Despite rain threatening all day, the latest round of the Newcastle-under-Lyme Track League took place at the Lyme Valley Stadium, Staffordshire on Thursday 10th June 2010. A good turnout of riders put on some fast racing despite the cold conditions.
In the A Class League the top two in the overall league, Matt Rotherham and Adrian Adgar were absent which left the way open for a number of riders to close the gap at the top. Declan Byrne took full advantage as he scored 12 points in winning the 8 lap scratch, points race and the 10 mile scratch along with a second place in the win and out race. His most impressive ride was in the 10 mile scratch where he broke away with 9 laps to go to win by 150m. Steve Clayton also impressed as he won the win and out race.
The B Class events saw league leader Ryan Whatmough extend is overall lead as he won the 8 lap scratch and the 10 mile scratch. Other wins in this league went to Phil Houlton, Newcastle Rc 2001 in the win and out and Sam Birchall Lyme RC in the points race. Ryan also impressed as he won the latest round of the Keirin league in a very close finish from Tom Powell, Newcastle RC 2001 and Barney Swinnerton, Lyme RC.
The Youth events saw a healthy 15 riders take part with Joel Partington, riding for his second claim club Lyme RC, take 8 points and also take over the overall lead. Second placed Sean Mayer won the opening 200m TT with a quick 12.53 and Louis Preston won the Sydney Handicap.
There were 20 Freewheelers riders this week with the points spread across all riders. The 15 race programme saw some close finishes with the top point?s scorers in each group as follows;
