The Brooks Cycles sponsored Newcastle Track League event held on Thursday 19th May proved to be one of the best in years in terms of the quality of the racing and also in the fact that 75 riders competed. This attendance figure is largest that the organisers can remember which shows the popularity of the league and also the new racing structure.
The nights A Class Sprinters events were boosted by four riders from the Great Britain Academy and ODP team. The opening 200m time trial saw a sign of what was to come when Callum Skinner, City of Edinburgh RC recorded the fastest time in 11.19 seconds, closely followed by local rider Kian Emadi, Tunstall Wheelers with 11.20. The sprint heats were all close affairs with the final seeing a reversal of the 200m TT with Kian taking the win from Callum, with Matt Rotherham, Sportcity Velo third and Rowan Elliott, VC St Raphael forth . The Team sprint saw Callum and Kian team up with Phil Houlton, Newcastle RC 2001 to take the win in a super fast 41.27 seconds for the 600m event. The 1 km dash saw World Masters Champion Steve Cronshaw, Brereton Wheelers take a narrow win from a fast closing Ryan Whatmough, Shepherd Cycles.
In the A Class endurance races, league leader Robert Lambton, Brooks Cycles, extended his lead as he won the devil and placed 2nd in the 10 lap scratch. He was also a member of the winning team pursuit squad with Will Thomas, Team Velocity, Paul Whatmough, Shepherd Cycles and Luke Boulton Team Walls. It was Luke who also took the first win of the night as he produced a powerful sprint to win the 10 lap scratch.
The B Class events saw a good field of riders compete over the four events with Christian Braybrooke, Team Velocity taking an impressive haul of 10 points. He won the points race and was also the first B home in the 10 mile scratch. Not far behind on 8 points was the ever improving George Edwards, Lyme RC who won the devil along with second places in the points and 10 mile event.
The Final race of the night for the A and B groups was the 10 mile scratch with one of the best finishes seen in years. With 2 ¼ laps to go Matt Rotherham flew out of the bunch to take what looked like a winning lead. However with 1 ½ laps to go Kian Emadi and Callum Skinner took off in pursuit and caught Matt with 150m to go with Kian taking the win. The last 200m time was not recorded however it looked pretty quick.
The youth races saw 20 riders compete, another record for the league. First time rider Harry Crew, Derby Mercury was the top points scorer as he took a victory in the points race and good second places in the devil and scratch races. Another first time rider at the league James Shaw, Heanor RC scored 6 points as he won the devil and took second in the points. The other victors on the night were Sophie Capewell, Lichfield CC who held on superbly to win the block handicap and league leader Joel Partington who won the final race the 6 lap scratch.
The Freewheelers races saw 20 riders compete with many new faces welcomed to the league. The top points scorers were as follows in each group;

With the riders attending at a high level there will be a Group 3 next week with riders who previously scored points in Group 2 having these transferred to their new league table.
