Despite heavy showers throughout the day and even a hail storm half way through the Freewheelers events a full programme of races took place at Week 4 of the Brooks Cycles sponsored Newcastle Track League in Staffordshire. The bad weather forecast did not put off 23 freewheelers taking part and 37 riders in the main league which was very pleasing for the organisers.
With the evenings getting longer this week saw the first time that the full ten mile race could take place and this turned out to be a far affair. The A Class riders made up their 2 lap disadvantage within 18 laps and then the attacks started. The pace stayed high throughout before with around 14 laps to go Adrain Adgar of Go Sport Spex RT took off from the bunch. His advantage grew to nearly half a lap at one point however the bunch then started to organise a chase and he was caught with just 2 laps to go. The mass charge for the line saw Matthew Rotherham of Sportcity Velo produce a superb sprint from 200m out to hold off a fast finishing Andrew Jackson of Go Sport Spex RT and Alex Simmons of Lyme RC finishing in a fine third place. Adrian Adgar however had the consolation of being the top A Class points scorer on the night with 9 ½ scored which took him to within 1 ½ points of league leader Declan Byrne who missed the night due to studying for his GCSE?s.
The second round of the Brooks Cycles Handicap league saw a fine win from the fast improving Joffie Houlton of Newcastle RC 2001 as he held on to win from Dave Smith of Brereton Wheelers and Tom Powell Newcastle RC 2001.
The B League events saw the emergence of Joe Turner from Eastlands Velo who won the opening 8 lap scratch, the course de primes and the 10 mile scratch. Joe has improved his speed a great deal over the winter and he has now emerged as a strong contender for this overall title.
The Youth events were as usual well supported and the racing was exciting throughout. There were close finishes in the Block Handicap where Thomas Rotherham won from Emily Capewell and Leone Davis and in the 6 lap scratch race where Sam Birchall took the verdict from Christian Braybrooke and Joel Partington.
The Freewheelers put in some great performances with some very tight decisions having to be made by the judges however at the end of this 10 race programme the top points scorers were as follows; Group 1 Joel Partington, Group 2 Dominic Gregory and in Group 3 Megan Williams. This year has seen the introduction of one point being awarded to each freewheeler rider who turns up each week, which will help their scores in the overall league table.
