The first night of the Brooks Cycles sponsored Track League, Newcastle, Staffs saw the introduction of the split A Class events with the categories being Sprint and Endurance. The general views of all the riders that rode was that it was a success with some great racing produced from a good turnout of competitors.
In the Endurance events the early league leader is junior Robert Lambton, Brooks Cycles, who won the opening 8 lap scratch and then took his second win in the final 10 mile scratch. Along with a third place in the point?s race he amassed 9 points. Paul Whatmough, Shepherd Cycles also showed good form as he scored 6 points from his second places in the 8 lap scratch and points race. Also scoring well on this first night were Alex Simmons, Lyme RC, who won the points race and Neil Cummins who has moved up successfully from the B Class group.
The sprint races saw some close finishes with the closest being the sprint final where the four finalist?s finished with only a bike length between them with Barney Swinnerton, SIS.com taking the win from Phil Houlton, Newcastle RC 2001 and Sean Mayer Lyme RC. The Team sprint event saw the winning team of Phil Houlton, Lauren Quenby, Newcastle RC 2001 and Ryan Whatmough, Shepherd Cycles taking the victory by 0.4 of a second in this exciting event. The win and out event saw Ryan Whatmough take a deserved win from Alex Taylor, Sportcity Velo and Rosie Blount Derby Mercury. This gives Ryan an early lead in this league
The B Class events also saw some close finishes with father and son Dave and Jack Fearon, Weaver Valley CC ending the night on 7 ½ and 7 points to lead this league. Dave won the course de primes and Jack took the 8 lap scratch. Other good rides came from Alex Webb, Lyme RC who won the final 10 mile scratch.
In the youth events, last years winner Joel Partington, Lyme RC, took an early lead in this years competition as he won two events, the devil and the scratch event. The other two individual events was the block handicap which was won by Sallie Birchall, Lyme RC. Another rider who rode well on the night was Paige Millward who came second in the scratch and was a member of the winning team sprint team
